Forensic Genetics

Forensic Genetics is mainly looking at person identification tasks based on genetic profiles. Biological samples may be collected on site or from the surface of an exhibit and the respective genetic profiles are correlated with those persons who might have been present during a crime. Genetic fingerprints are helpful to identify a perpetrator, a victim or generally to explain the underlying background of a crime. Another objective in Forensic Genetics is the identification of victims in desasterous situations or of dead persons/soldiers in a war.
